Merry Christmas from the Mike Utley Foundation!

Season’s Greetings
Taking Care Of
Each Other
For many, the
Christmas Season
presents a time for
all of us to reflect on
our accomplishments
during the last twelve months.
Unexpected events can occur that
alter our plans and in some cases
completely change our lives. The
mission of the Mike Utley Foundation
is to provide support to the thousands
of people that are disabled by a spinal
cord injury each year, for those that
have reached a fork in the road and
now must reinvent their lives.
For all of you who have faithfully
supported our mission it seemed
appropriate to reflect on the last five
years. Here is a brief review of the
work that your donations have
accomplished.
Research to various entities to find a
cure for Spinal Cord Injuries
$160,206.20
Terrain Parks located on Hospital
Campuses to be used by newly injured
patients for instruction in the use of a
wheelchair on various terrains.
$135,000.00
Equipment and Educational
Purchases. Durable medical
equipment not covered by insurance
companies as well as educational
materials to assist in everyday living.
$69,000.00
Rehabilitation Scholarships are a
new program initiated by the Mike
Utley Foundation. The Scholarships
are to provide post injury patients the
opportunity to increase their skills and
adapt to a more independent lifestyle.
This is an intense one-month program
that will include biofeedback, physical
therapy, weight lifting, dietary
assessments and a fitness center
membership.
$12,680.00
Our year-end campaign goal is to
award an additional five
Rehabilitation Scholarships for
2009. The cost for this extensive
program is $6,340.00 per person.
Insurance companies will provide for
6 weeks of rehabilitation while the
patient is still in the hospital. This
isn’t enough, especially at a time
when the patient is physically,
emotionally and mentally adjusting to
life as a disabled person. The
candidate must be at least one-year
post injury to qualify for the program.
We all have so much to be thankful
for and we need to continue to take
care of each other. Please consider a
tax-deductible year-end gift to
support this valuable program.
May this Christmas Season bring you
joy and the promise of exciting
opportunities in the New Year. Thank
you for your generous contributions in
supporting those that are living with a
spinal cord injury.
Thumbs Up!
